A contrast-enhanced pelvic MRI should be performed before fibroid embolization or other non-surgical fibroid treatments. Ultrasound alone is not sufficient to determine the best treatment option for myomas.
Because MRI allows for a detailed assessment of the number, shape, location, and vitality of fibroids, a pelvic MRI is crucial for selecting the right treatment method. Non-surgical myoma treatment can be the preferred option for all fibroids that do not have a thin stem and have a high blood supply on MRI.
Non-surgical myoma treatment can also be used as a single session to reduce the size of very large fibroids before surgery. However, embolization treatments performed by an experienced interventional radiologist can often provide treatment without the need for surgery.
