Lumbar vertebrae can collapse, particularly in elderly patients due to osteoporosis or cancer metastasis.
These collapses can cause severe pain, and fractures can extend posteriorly, compressing the spinal cord. In these patients, a type of cement called cementum can be injected into the vertebrae.
The warmth of the cementum provides immediate pain relief and prevents the fracture from compressing the spinal cord. This treatment is performed safely in interventional radiology by experienced hands.
Because treatment options vary greatly depending on the severity of the compression fracture, patients should be evaluated and examined with recent CT and MRI scans. Detailed information can be provided after the evaluation.
