Cyst Evacuation with Breast Ultrasound

1 min read

If a lump palpable on a breast ultrasound is determined to be cystic, aspiration is performed by inserting a needle into the cyst under ultrasound guidance. Fine-needle aspiration of breast cysts is a very easy and effective procedure. In experienced hands, it can be performed painlessly within seconds. If necessary, the fluid aspirated with the needle can be sent to a pathology laboratory for pathological examination.

After the cyst is drained, the pain subsides immediately, and the palpable lump disappears. It's a procedure favored by both radiologists and women. It's typically performed on cysts larger than 3 cm in diameter. However, it can also be used on smaller breast cysts if they are bleeding or infected, causing pain.
