Features of Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging

1 min read

Magnetic Resonance (MRI) imaging of the breast is performed using radiofrequency waves within a strong magnetic field. It is a radiation-free imaging method. Breast MRI, performed in conjunction with mammography and breast ultrasound, has a sensitivity of 95% for diagnosing breast cancer. Patients are asked to lie face down and remain motionless for approximately 25 minutes during the MRI.

The examination, which involves intravenous administration of contrast material, determines both the shape and vascularity of breast lesions. No significant side effects of the contrast material used have been reported, except in patients with renal failure. Sedatives may be used before the examination for those with closed-space anxiety.

Because breast MRI requires a powerful MRI machine, it is not possible to obtain sufficient quality images with open MRI. For accurate results, a breast MRI should be performed in women who are menstruating, immediately after their menstrual period ends.
