Biopsies of microcalcifications and lesions detected only on mammography are performed under mammography guidance. Mammography-guided biopsies are typically performed using stereotactic techniques. Compared to ultrasound-guided biopsies, mammography-guided biopsies are slightly more tedious. However, experienced breast radiologists can perform these biopsies in as little as 20 minutes. Patients can resume their normal routines after the biopsy.
In centers equipped with tomosynthesis devices, tomosynthesis-guided biopsies are considered a more successful biopsy method because they are performed under higher-resolution imaging guidance.
