What are fibroadenomas?

1 min read

Fibroadenomas are benign breast tumors that are frequently observed in young women, especially before menopause. Some women may have numerous fibroadenomas, a condition called fibroadenomatosis. They are usually monitored and do not require treatment.

However, tumors that grow rapidly, cause pain, or cause palpable hardness are operated on after a biopsy confirms the diagnosis of fibroadenoma. Surgery for recurring fibroadenomas can be frustrating for many young women. In addition to the risks of repeat surgery and anesthesia, the resulting scarring on the breast skin is another source of stress for patients.

With advancing technology, vacuum biopsy needles are now used instead of standard needles used in pre-operative biopsies, allowing complete removal of fibroadenomas. This new vacuum-assisted biopsy technique allows all breast lumps up to 4 cm, especially fibroadenomas, to be treated in a painless, bloodless procedure that takes just a few minutes.

This method, which is also more affordable than surgical treatments, has not become widely available in our country because it is currently performed by only a small number of interventional radiologists. We successfully apply this new treatment method to patients who seek non-surgical fibroadenoma treatment at our clinic.
